Historic Washington, Georgia is beautiful all year round, with over 100 antebellum and historic homes. This lovely southern town teems with history and heritage and has been described by Southern Living Magazine as “one of the prettiest small towns in Georgia”.
Here’s your chance to peek inside and delve into stories of a few of these treasures and enjoy an exclusive luncheon at the Washington Woman’s Club headquarters housed in a 1780’s historic home.
As part of this charming tour, take time to visit the art show featuring the works of regional artists and artisans, located at The Court Street Livery, a c.1890s barn just off the Washington Square.
While you’re in Washington, be sure to visit the Mary Willis Library with its original Tiffany stained-glass windows and other original furnishings. Built in 1889, this was the first public library in Georgia, and it remains in full operation as a public library with an invaluable core collection of rare books on Wilkes County and Georgia history.
For history buffs, The Washington History Museum houses an impressive collection of artifacts and information on the history of Wilkes County Georgia and about the roles that Washington-Wilkes played in both the American Revolutionary War and the American Civil War.
Spring is the perfect time to stroll historic Downtown Washington and it’s Square lined with antique stores, trendy boutiques and gift shops, an elegant jewelry store and other fun shopping opportunities. You’ll find a variety of restaurants, pubs, an ice creamery, an upbeat coffee shop and even a sophisticated wine bar. A walk around downtown you’ll discover unique murals depicting Washington’s history and a working blacksmith iron works.
